The ability of comprehending idioms in children from multicultural families

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate of the ability to comprehend idioms in children from multicultural families. Thirty-six children(1st to 3rd grades) participated in the present study and were divided into three groups: ©Í 12 multicultural children from low SES families, ©Î 12 non-multicultural children from low SES families, ©Ï 12 non-multicultural children from middle SES families. In this study, children listened to ten different idioms, each presented in a brief dialogue and story context. And then, they were asked to choose the best idiomatic expression to supply the missing part from three alternatives. They also selected the best interpretation of the idiom from three alternatives. The results indicated that ©Í On idiom comprehension, multicultural children were not different from those of two non-multicultural groups, and ©Î multicultural children were also not different in error type occurred when interpreting the idiom.
